Anghiari Festival

Through the work I did for Southbank, I got this work. Designing the branding for a small arts festival in Anghiari in Italy. I had creative freedom again, which was cool. Used a photo I took off my balcony! Wicked! I am yet to see proof that these were posted all over Italy, which is what I am of course hoping for...yes. Anyway, this is it.

This is something I did for a band in Dunedin who got signed to Ode Records. They let me do what I wanted, so I proposed some fun with light painting. It a lovely 3 panel cardboard sleeve. YUM! I don't yet have a copy so i'll just upload the flat file thing. The top of the image (upside down) is the inlay where the CDs will sit. Etc etc etc! Shut up Angus, here it is!

I will put up some sexy product shots once I get a copy. YUS!

It's been a while. I recently did a bit of work for a Sinfonia in London who are looking to rebrand at some point in the future. I was brought in to present them with ideas of what kind of thing they could go for when the time came. This was the one I was most proud of.

My goodness, it has been quite some time since I did an update on here. I've done a number of things over the last few months which I can remember/share. I've been working for a few companies lately which has been keeping me busy. Here are a few things I've worked on though.

Did this for a band in Dunedin, not sure if this is the final version or if they actually use it, but I like it. NEXT!

This is a poster I whipped up for a gig in Dunedin, which reportedly drew 900 people? I'll happily take part of the credit for that.

Did a piece for Critic Magazine in Dunedin. Me and Andrew Jacombs have collaborated many times in the past. He's now head designer at Critic and asked me to do a badass illustration for the cover of the Gangs issue. I did this.

Quite a wee bit to report i think. Uni is driving me insane but with only a few weeks left I can't really complain. But I will. Wee!

Anyway, did a wee bit of work for Knives at Noon. Made them a cheeky poster. This is has been circulated nationally? Just casually.

Also, I wrote and directed a music video for OK! Crazy Fiction Lady with Andrew Jacombs. It goes something like this.

Here is a piece I was working on a little while back. It was a birthday present for my mother, who is a high school history teacher - and indeed very passionate about the subject in general. She is particularly interested in post war American politics and McCarthyism etc. So I designed this wee composition. I like to think of it as an original piece of American anti-communist propaganda.
So basically, the two big heads are President Roosevelt (left) and Sen. Joseph McCarthy (right) and the Rosenburgs who were american communists and the first citizens to be executed for espionage. The quote is one from McCarthy which in full is "McCarthyism is Americanism with its sleeves rolled"

So I got it printed A0 and it was all very epic. That's my story.

Well I haven't posted anything in ages! Mainly due to crappy internet and such I couldn't be bothered waiting for a billion years for an image to upload! This post is mainly motivated by something exciting which I have just been doing in the last few days. As I am now finished course for the year, filling the days can at times be a challenge. So only a few days ago I filled my time with creating this...
Yes, I created a cutout of my face! Aren't I clever! But not for they purpose of spray tagging my face all over the streets of Dunedin but the purpose of putting different pretty things behind it! Having just bought Stefan Sagmeister's book "Things I have learned in my life so far" which does just this as a cover. So I did this.
This idea then developed and I was struck by a creative muse while at work! As I have posted before, I very much enjoy doing design for musicians, and really love developing the branding for bands. I have recently been trying to develop an identity for a very new band called "OK! Crazy Fiction Lady". I was trapped in thinking the typography should be crazy and all over the place. But then I thought I should try this technique out on this lettering and let the "crazy" feel show through in the patterns I put behind each word/letter. I have just finished this not so long ago and it worked a treat!!!
God knows if this is what the band will end up using, I but am quite proud of it. My next task is to make cutout faces like the one above of each of the members and have crazy patterns behind each of them.

Other stuff I've been involved in lately is more work for the Southern Consort of Voices, some work for the Otago Festival of the Arts, contributed to the layout of a local high schools year book and also did a bit more work for trade aid, which I shall end this post with. Much love!

Heres my favourite poster from the 350.org campaign we had to design for final design 222 assignment.
Should briefly explain, basically light is projected onto buildings. The image on this building is light, yes thats right, LIGHT! (Not real light, but it could be. Thank you photoshop)
Who can ignore huge images on a building? Sweet!

So I got sent some photos today from my tutor. Some of my readers (lol) may recall the Te Roopu assignment which I posted about. Well what i posted was only the computery vector images. This is the phyisical thang baby! Way cooler than i remember. Comprised of a workbook, style guide, business cards and other things. The Style Guide is the most amazing part, devised by Mr Jacombs. Enough talk, pictures!!!

Mocking Climate Change.

Did this today. It's a mock up concept idea I had for a climate change campaign I've been devising for an assignment.
The slogan is a working slogan, however I kinda like it. I've been getting frustrated with the ways that climate change is being promoted. Banging pots and pans? Hippy beer festival? I see these kinds of events as preaching to the choir and they turn the issue at hand from a dangerous possible reality to some kind of alternative crap. So I wanted to devise a campaign that would hit home and be harsh. Work in progress.

I found a whole lot of shizzle I did for assignments ages ago that is actually really cool!!! Lookie!

This was called "Fake". Essentially had to create a fake photo to go with a headline provided. Mine was "Obama chooses economic crisis team". For those of you who are up with the current affairs of the world, you will understand why this team is not likely to help resolve the issue. Being made up of (from left to right) Bernie Madoff, Martha Stewart, myself and Jim Kramer. Good times.

Just finished this yesterday. It's a presentation board for an assignment where we had to use vectorworks to design a robot. The board required us to display the model from multiple angles and superimpose it into a photo. I had a lot of fun with this and went all out!

The Te Roopu Saga

Over the last six weeks for a group assignment for 'Communication Design Project' we were employed to completely redesign the identity of Te Roopu Maori, which is Otago University's student association for Maori students.
Fantastic Group comprised of myself, Gillian McCarthy and Andrew Jacombs.

We very quickly stumbled upon out concept for the logo and developed it.This was our final design for the logo, pretty fancy eh? this was a very different can of fish to what we are normally used to because the client was different to others, rather than seeing good design through simplicity this client required lots of detail, detail all of which had meaning. So a lot of research went on. So here is a brief explanation of the logo. The two main forms are a koru and a wave, the koru representing land and the wave the ocean, which is significant to geography of the wider dunedin area seeing is it a coastal city. The two forms interlinking represents strength and coming together (like students coming from all over NZ to university). The kaperua pattern i think represents something to do with baskets of knowledge and the weaving represents something. Obviously I forget the specifics, the other two in the group knew the explanation pretty darn well. Anyway, essentially we met the brief in regard to the significance of the iconography.

So after the logo was pretty much done, we (Andrew) had this crazy idea to incorporated light painting into the identity. For those of you who aren't familiar with the concepts of light painting, essentially you use a camera with a long exposure (about 2min) and while its exposing you very quickly use a torch to trace something in mid air, you will be left with the light and the surrounding landscape, and if done right the tracer won't appear in the image.
So we did this very late at night all around Dunedin. We used a giant logo that Andrew and myself bent out of what I think was some kind of steal, which was then fixed to a light stand. We got some very nice images.

And this is how we used the photos we took. This amazing wee flier was whipped up by Gillian at some point. It really did exactly what we wanted in terms of taking our design from a logo to and identity, but making the logo physical rather than just a vector illustration.

We haven't yet received our mark for this assignment. However the mark for this assignment was only half the motivation to do well, the main motivation for me to produce the best design out of the number of groups designing for this association, was the fact that one would be chosen and actually used as Te Roopus' brand.

Innovationizzle

There is a great building in campus which I have admired for some time. The Innovation Centre is a magnificent glass structure designed locally I believe by Mason&Wales architects.
This piece I did for an assignment which required us to use illustrator to make a pretty picture of either buildings or people, I started this but very soon found out that I wasn't able to do it as buildings that were on campus weren't allowed. So it was about half finished for a couple of months until I picked it up again and completed it for fun. Frankly I think that it is a lovely image. The building itself is really quite dull in this image, what makes it really interesting is that this massive glass structure reflects. So that's what I focused on. Was pretty happy with this image when it was finished.

Did this for an infographic assignment earlier this year. Was meant to be a group assignment, but due to a shit group it ended up being a solo project. The idea was to find something with some kind of statistics to represent graphically. So I chose to document the occurrence of different architectural styles down Dunedin's main street. Admittedly I know nothing about architecture so the terms used are crap and I basically just assumed what each building was. So I'm sure there is no accuracy in terms of the information displayed but I do think it looks quite nice.

Just as a side note: I owe a great deal of thanks to my tutors Scott Savage and Sian O'Gorman who basically acted as my group members and helped me a great deal. Cheers guys.

Me wonders if anyone will look at this a go "Ooh my, what a cool person". Any who I am Angus, I'm a communication design student and this would essentially be my little corner of the internetZ where I'll post some of my workees. Kinda mainly for me to reminisce, but why not share at this same time. Guess I'll start by posting some of the work I've done over the last year or so. Quite a lot of crap - but I'll just put up what i consider to be good.

Designed this wee thang for a band I was in not so long ago. The band no longer exists, but the identity I created for it is still probably the thing I am proudest of.

Released an EP, the images were drawn by a member of the band which I then incorporated the identity into etc etc. It was a lovely cardboard case with a dark purple sleeve inside with a very large white logo on it. I loved it. I still have many copies if anyone wants one. Not for the music, for the design!

So I can't really remember when I did those, but it must be a year ago now. It was a lovely wee project as it gave me a chance to design with a "client" and to play with the print and production process (production being be sitting in my room for hours cutting and gluing these covers. Gosh).

So that was the King Rex design story. Epic huh?
